South Miami, FL to Discuss City Regulations on Plastic Straws

Commissioner Bonich requested this Discussion Item be placed on the agenda to consider the City’s Regulations regarding plastic straws. Section 13A-23 of the City Code regulates the use and distribution of plastic straws, single use polystyrene containers, and single use plastic bags by “City staff, city contractors, and special event permittees.” It has come to Commissioner Bonich’s attention that local businesses believe they are limited by this section, even though by its terms it is not applicable to them except when they act as a city contractor or special event permittee. This may be an opportunity for public messaging to clarify the extent of the City’s regulation
