Inverness, FL to Discuss a School Zone Photo Enforcement Program
The Florida Legislature, by the way of HB 657 (2023), provides municipalities with an ability to enforce speed regulations in designated School Zones by way of photo/camera detection systems. The Sheriff and City Administration have discussed the concept and the differentials between a red light type program and a school zone program. This evening, representatives are here from the Citrus County Sheriff's Office to present the concept for potential next step consideration by the Council. For the program to move forward, the next step would be the drafting of an enabling/controlling ordinance in concert with an interlocal agreement with the Sheriff. It is recommended that Council receive the presentation and deliberate the matter. Should Council desire to take the aforementioned next steps, a vote to give direction to the City Manager to proceed would be required.
